What is cellulite ?
Cellulite is a term used to describe the appearance of dimpled skin, usually on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen caused by the accumulation of fat deposits under the surface of the skin. Cellulite is not a serious medical condition and can range in severity from mild to severe. Mild cellulite cases can only be seen when the skin is pinched. More severe cellulite cases make the skin appear rumpled and bumpy. Cellulite is sometimes described as skin with a cottage cheese texture, can be unflattering, and it may make you self-conscious when wearing shorts or a swimming suit.
How do hormones affect cellulite?
On average, women have 6 to 11 percent more body fat than men. In fact, women are able to store fat more efficiently than men. A study suggested a link between one hormone, a variant of estrogen and women's ability to store fat. The study showed that the variant of estrogen reduces a woman's ability to
burn energy after eating, resulting in more fat being stored around the body. The study also showed that female puberty and early pregnancy lead to increased levels of estrogen.
