Cellulite Issues

What is cellulite ?

celluliteCellulite is a term used to describe the appearance of dimpled skin, usually on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen caused by the accumulation of fat deposits under the surface of the skin. Cellulite is not a serious medical condition and can range in severity from mild to severe. Mild cellulite cases can only be seen when the skin is pinched. More severe cellulite cases make the skin appear rumpled and bumpy. Cellulite is sometimes described as skin with a cottage cheese texture, can be unflattering, and it may make you self-conscious when wearing shorts or a swimming suit.

How do hormones affect cellulite?

On average, women have 6 to 11 percent more body fat than men. In fact, women are able to store fat more efficiently than men. A study suggested a link between one hormone, a variant of estrogen and women's ability to store fat.  The study showed that the variant of estrogen reduces a woman's ability to

burn energy after  eating, resulting in more fat being stored around the body. The study also showed that female puberty and early pregnancy lead to increased levels of estrogen.

What is the relationship between cellulite and the lymphatic system ?

When we eat, the calories that are not used for energy ar e converted to triglycerides and stored in fat cells.

Fat cells, however, can also store toxins. The fat distribution is different when storing calories than when storing toxins. My theory is that toxins in fat cells is what leads to cellulite. Researchers are now, also linking cellulite with the lymphatic system. In fact, cellulite is directly related to how many lymph nodes are in an area. The more lymph nodes are in an area, the greater chance for cellulite to appear. Therefore, the lymphatic system plays an important role in flushing the toxins out of the body. In fact, if the lymphatic system is not functioning properly, it can get backed up and the wastes in the system may become toxic because they cannot be removed, causing the body to stop functioning properly and contributing to the appearance of cellulite. Helping the body restore the detoxification process will allow the body to stop creating more cellulite. It will also reverse the process and remove the fat deposits that lead to cellulite.

What are some lifestyle changes that can help?

The following are some suggestions that can help you:

  • Drink water throughout the day.
  • Incorporate exercise into your day. Even moderate exercise will help. The contraction and movement of the skeletal muscles will cause the lymph fluid to move around.
  • Get a lymphatic message. The manual manipulation of the skeletal muscles will help the lymph fluid to move around.
  • Reduce or quit smoking.
